“There appears to be a glitch in some of the new GeForce FX 5800 Ultra cards that could cause overheating issues in some cases. NVIDIA has reportedly been able to recreate some of the symptoms seen by PC Ekspert, so there seems to be something to the story here. If you’re considering the purchase of a 5800, or already have one, this article is worth a look.
I would point out the misguided comments shown on the page, and advise taking them with a grain of salt. NVIDIA informed the tester that they evaluate the cooling ability of their cards in a 100C oven, which was criticized for whatever reason. The author states: “Anything that has to be tested in an oven has serious fundamental flaws.” I disagree entirely. They don’t have to be tested in such a way, but NVIDIA does it to ensure that the cooling mechanisms will work adequately, able to deal with the extremes to which users inevitably subject high performance hardware.
The same Ekspert figured his temp sensor reading might be lying to him, so what does he do? Sizzles his finger by touching the heatsink, then takes another shot at NVIDIA for pointing out that it seems to only be the writers that brilliantly go fondling running electronic components. If the gauze bandage fits…”
