Singapore’s StarHub to launch digital TV by year-end
StarHub, Singapore’s sole
pay-television operator, says it will launch its digital cable services by
year-end.
The company also says it has given contracts to four companies to help install
the system for the digital cable services.
Digital television will lead to a wider choice of channels, improved video and
audio quality, and interactive services such as email, SMS chats and games.
"The launch of StarHub’s digital cable services will provide an even better
hubbing experience as our customers will then be able to watch, surf and talk on
the single digital cable platform," said StarHub.
StarHub said it awarded contracts to build the digital television system to
US-based OpenTV; Swiss-based Nagravision S.A, part of Kudelski SA;
France-headquartered Thomson Broadcast & Media Solutions; and Advanced Digital
Broadcast from Taiwan.
StarHub will give more details on the digital cable services at a later date.
StarHub provides a full range of information, communications and entertainment
services via fixed, mobile and Internet platforms.
It operates its own nationwide broadband network that delivers multi-channel
cable TV services, data services, voice services, and Internet access services.
StarHub also operates its own GSM network that is fully upgraded for GPRS
services.
StarHub currently holds the monopoly on subscription TV services.
But, the government last month opened a tender for Singapore’s second pay-TV
operation – which will effectively end StarHub’s control of the sector.
